Question 1

How many dog parks are there in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

The City of Calgary operates around 160 public off-leash areas covering roughly 1,145 hectares, about 13% of all city parkland, which is among the highest provision of any major city in North America. Our directory details 122 of them with maps, amenities and hours. Provision is uneven by quadrant: of the parks we list with a quadrant in their address, 44 are NW, 24 SW, 16 SE and 13 NE.

Question 2

Are Calgary dog parks fenced?

Accepted Answer

Mostly not, and this is the single most important thing to understand about Calgary. Off-leash areas here are typically unfenced sections of larger parks marked by posted signs. Of the parks we list, 82% have a designated off-leash area but only 31% are fenced and just 9% have a double gate. An unfenced area suits a dog with solid recall and is a poor choice for a new rescue or a determined chaser.

Question 3

Does my dog need a licence to use a Calgary off-leash area?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every dog in Calgary must be licensed by three months of age, and the tag should be worn in public. Licensing is also the fastest route to being reunited if your dog is picked up by Animal Services. Beyond the legal requirement, group settings raise the risk of transmissible illness, so ask your veterinarian which additional vaccinations suit a dog that uses off-leash areas regularly.

Question 4

What are the off-leash rules in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

Your dog must respond to your voice, sound or visual commands at all times, which is the legal standard rather than proximity. Dogs must be leashed elsewhere unless a sign says otherwise, with a maximum two metre leash on pathways. One person may handle no more than six off-leash dogs, and failing to control a dog in an off-leash area carries a fine of around $100. Dogs are barred from school grounds, playgrounds, sports fields and swimming areas.

Question 5

Are Calgary dog parks open in winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes, off-leash areas stay open year round and around 33 of the parks we list are open 24 hours. Two things constrain winter use: outdoor water taps are shut off in cold months, and only 19% of parks have night lighting against very short December daylight. Chinooks add a particular hazard by turning packed snow to ice and then mud within a day, so check conditions before committing to a longer walk.

Question 6

Which Calgary quadrant has the most dog parks?

Accepted Answer

The northwest, by a clear margin. Of the Calgary parks in our directory with a quadrant in their address, 44 are NW, 24 SW, 16 SE and 13 NE. Northwest residents have the widest choice, while those in the northeast should check hours and parking before setting out. Accessible paths, available at around 40% of listed parks, are worth filtering for since they stay usable when open ground is churned or icy.

Question 7

Is there drinking water at Calgary dog parks?

Accepted Answer

Only at some. About 24% of the Calgary parks we list have a water source, and those taps are turned off through the cold months regardless. No Calgary park in our directory has a dog wash station. Bring your own water and a bowl year round, along with waste bags, since only around 48% of parks supply them despite 65% having bins.
