Question 1

How many off-leash areas does Edmonton have?

Accepted Answer

The City of Edmonton maintains more than sixty off-leash sites, many of them threaded through the North Saskatchewan river valley, which forms one of the largest urban park systems in North America. Our directory covers 22 of them in detail, with maps, hours and amenities. Edmonton is comfortably the best equipped city in this guide, with 77% of listed parks having bins and 73% supplying waste bags.

Question 2

Are Edmonton dog parks fenced?

Accepted Answer

About 45% of the Edmonton parks we list are fenced. Many river valley sites are deliberately unfenced, which gives dogs genuine room to range but places more weight on recall, especially since these areas border wildlife corridors. If your dog is newly adopted or inclined to chase, start at a fenced site. Around 18% of listed parks also have double gate entry, adding a second layer of security at the entrance.

Question 3

Do Edmonton dog parks have lighting?

Accepted Answer

About half do, which is the best rate in this guide and genuinely important in a city where December daylight is very short. Combined with the nine listed parks that are open 24 hours, lighting makes winter evening visits practical rather than theoretical. If you can only walk after work between November and February, filter specifically for lit sites, and carry a headlamp as backup since not all lighting covers the whole area.

Question 4

Are there coyotes in Edmonton off-leash areas?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Coyotes live in the river valley year round and are most active at dawn and dusk, exactly when many owners walk in winter. Keep your dog close, never allow chasing, and leash up immediately if you see one. The City advises against letting dogs pursue wildlife at all. Small dogs are at greater risk, so keep them near you rather than letting them range ahead on trails at low light.

Question 5

How cold is too cold for a dog park visit in Edmonton?

Accepted Answer

Below roughly minus twenty, keep visits short and watch ears, paws and tail tips for early signs of frostbite, which appear as pale or waxy skin. Thin-coated breeds need a coat and often benefit from boots. The most common winter complaint is ice balls forming between the toes, along with irritation from de-icing salt, so rinse and dry paws after every cold weather visit and consider paw balm as a preventive.
