Question 1

How many dog parks are there in Burnaby?

Accepted Answer

Our directory lists 15 dog parks in Burnaby, with hours, amenities and maps for each. Several sit within large regional parks, including two fenced areas at Confederation Park, one of which is for small dogs only, plus off-leash space at Robert Burnaby Park, Taylor Park and Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park. Burnaby scores highly across the board on amenities compared with most cities in this guide.

Question 2

Do I need to carry a leash in a Burnaby off-leash area?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Burnaby requires you to keep a leash in hand at all times while your dog is off-leash, and to leash your dog before and after using the area. Your dog must also wear a valid licence and have current vaccinations. These are enforceable requirements rather than guidance, so build them into your routine, particularly the habit of leashing at the boundary rather than at the car.

Question 3

What are Burnaby off-leash area hours?

Accepted Answer

All Burnaby dog off-leash areas are open from dawn to dusk. That constrains winter visits considerably, since useful daylight in December is short and only about 13% of the parks we list have lighting. If you can only walk after work between November and February, check which nearby sites are lit before settling on one, and carry a torch or a collar light regardless.

Question 4

Are Burnaby dog parks fenced?

Accepted Answer

Many are. About 73% of the parks we list are fenced, one of the better rates in this guide, and 53% have separate small dog areas. Burnaby also scores well on comfort: 73% have shade and 73% have a water source, which together extend the usable day considerably in summer. Note that some off-leash provision takes the form of trails rather than enclosures, such as the park trail north of Penzance Drive.

Question 5

Is there wildlife near Burnaby dog parks?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Coyotes are present across Burnaby, and bears occasionally appear in the larger regional parks, particularly in late summer and autumn. Keep your dog close, never allow chasing, and be aware that a dog that ranges ahead on a forest trail can encounter wildlife before you see it. Autumn mushrooms are a separate risk in wooded areas, so photograph anything your dog eats and seek advice quickly.
