Despite the growth and improvements to surrounding North City amenities, including enhanced landscaping in adjacent areas, the dog park hasn't received comparable maintenance or upgrades.

As San Marcos experiences residential expansion, with new housing developments planned for the region, the park's future role as a community resource may warrant reconsideration, particularly regarding facility improvements and amenities to better serve the anticipated increase in local pet owners.

Several essential rules help keep this off-leash facility safe, clean, and enjoyable for all dogs and their owners.

• Licensing and Vaccination: Your dog must be licensed and current on rabies vaccinations before entering. Dogs must be at least six months old and free from contagious conditions.
• Handler Responsibility: You may bring a maximum of three dogs per handler. Keep all dogs under voice command and supervise them closely throughout your visit to prevent aggressive behavior.
• Cleanup Requirements: You must immediately clean up after your dog. Waste bags and trash bins are provided for your convenience.
• Prohibited Items: Leave food and treats at home, as they can trigger conflicts between dogs. Female dogs in heat can't use the park. Dogs should always have a leash handy for emergencies, even in off-leash areas.

There's no water source available for dogs, no waste bag dispensers despite what park rules may suggest, and minimal shelter from the sun.

Bethany Nicholls noted the sparse conditions: "No benches, no water for dogs, no grass, and no shade areas. It's loose dirt and wood chips mixed in it."

The park's maintenance has been a concern for visitors.

Jason Stilgebouer observed that while "the North City has immaculate landscaping," the dog park itself appears neglected, with "overgrown weeds and billboards in it," suggesting the city may not prioritize upkeep of this particular facility.

Despite these limitations, the location offers proximity to nearby amenities like Kaiser and the DMV, which some visitors find convenient while attending to other errands.
