Question 1

How many dog parks are there in Atlanta?

Accepted Answer

The City of Atlanta formally designates two official off-leash dog parks, at Piedmont Park and South Bend Park. Our directory casts a wider net and lists 18 Atlanta dog parks in total, including neighbourhood, county and privately managed spaces, each with hours, amenities and a map. Of those, 89% have a designated off-leash area, 33% are fenced and 33% have separate small dog areas.

Question 2

Are Atlanta dog parks fenced?

Accepted Answer

City designated off-leash areas must be completely fenced with a double-gated entrance and exit system, which is a formal requirement rather than a nicety. Across all the Atlanta parks we list, including non-city sites, about 33% are fenced. The double gate matters: wait for the outer gate to latch before opening the inner one, even when you are in a hurry, because that airlock is what stops a dog slipping out past an arriving visitor.

Question 3

Can I bring treats to an Atlanta dog park?

Accepted Answer

Only bite-size dog treats. Other food of any kind is not permitted inside city off-leash areas, and the reasoning is behavioural: food triggers resource guarding, and a dog that never guards at home may guard a high value item surrounded by strangers. Bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, jogging and strollers are also prohibited inside, and children under 12 need close adult supervision.

Question 4

What is the fine for having a dog off-leash in Atlanta?

Accepted Answer

People who do not follow the leash and scoop laws can be fined up to $100 per occurrence. Dogs must be leashed in every Atlanta park except inside an area explicitly designated as off-leash, and owners must clean up after their pets. The city has periodically renewed enforcement of off-leash rules, so it is worth checking posted signage rather than assuming a quiet corner of a park is tolerated.

Question 5

Do Atlanta dog parks have shade and water?

Accepted Answer

Both are scarce. Only about 11% of the parks we list have shade and 11% have a water source, with waste bags supplied at just 6%. In a climate where summer heat and humidity combine to make panting far less effective at cooling a dog, that makes a shaded park worth a longer drive. Bring more water than you expect to need, and shift visits to early morning from June through September.
