Overview
The off-leash area at Shawnee Mission Park is one of the largest in the region, covering 44 acres inside a 1,756 acre park run by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District.
It sits west of the 87th and Ridgeview entrance and includes a dog beach on the park's 120 acre lake, which is the reason most people make the trip.
A paved trail leads down to the lake and beach area, with wood chip and natural surface trails running through grassland and wooded sections.
There is paved parking and restrooms at the off-leash area itself.

Planning Your Visit to Shawnee Mission Park Dog Beach
Forty four acres of mixed terrain is a very different proposition from a fenced enclosure. Dogs range a long way here, so reliable recall matters.
The off-leash area closes for routine maintenance every Tuesday and Thursday from 5AM to 9AM. Outside those windows it is open year round during park hours.
Bring a towel. Dogs that go in the lake come out wet and muddy, and it is a walk back to the car park.
The wider park has swimming beaches, a marina, eleven shelters, an archery range and an 18 hole disc golf course, so the site absorbs a long visit easily.
