What to Expect at Waltham City Dog Ranch

Set your expectations by the size. The enclosures are small relative to the open land around them, and that is the most common complaint. Christopher Bradshaw put it bluntly: "It's in the middle of dozens of acres of land yet is only the size of a tennis court."

Bring water. Renee Johnson Walsh is emphatic on this: "Some reviews and web entries mention that there is water available. Please be advised that there is no water anywhere near this dog park." She still rates the place, but adds "please remember to come prepared."

Shade is equally scarce, and the gravel surface heats up, so time summer visits for early or late in the day.

Carol Hurley makes the case for it: "The whole area is kept super clean, and there are 2 fenced in off-leash areas to choose from, to accommodate different size dogs when deemed necessary. It's a quiet, countryside-like setting, with paths if you want to just walk your dog."

Thick Flavor gives the practical warning for the surrounding land: "Near some great walking trails as well. Watch out for deer ticks and wood ticks in the surrounding areas."

Laura Seifert notes a design quirk worth knowing at the gate: there is a double enclosure on the way in but not on the way out, which makes re-leashing awkward.

The disused hospital building is visible from part of the site. It is fenced off and does not affect the dog park, but it surprises first time visitors.
