Question 1

How many dog parks are there in Brooklyn?

Accepted Answer

Our directory lists 28 dog parks and dog runs across Brooklyn, covering neighbourhoods from Greenpoint and Williamsburg through Park Slope to Bay Ridge, with hours, amenities and maps for each. The borough combines purpose-built enclosed runs, such as those at Hillside Park and McCarren Park, with off-leash hours inside larger green spaces including Prospect Park, where the dog beach is a long-standing local institution.

Question 2

What are the off-leash hours in Brooklyn parks?

Accepted Answer

Many New York City parks, including several in Brooklyn, allow off-leash access during designated early morning and evening hours in specified areas, typically before 9am and after 9pm. Prospect Park is the best known example. Outside those windows, and outside marked runs, dogs must be leashed. Check the posted signage at your park and the NYC Parks website, since the boundaries of where off-leash applies are often narrower than people assume.

Question 3

Are Brooklyn dog runs fenced?

Accepted Answer

About 14% of the Brooklyn parks we list are fenced, which is lower than Manhattan. Many off-leash spaces here are open areas within larger parks rather than enclosures, so recall is the deciding factor in where you can safely go. For a dog still learning, choose a purpose-built enclosed run rather than relying on off-leash hours in an open park. Around 21% of listed parks have separate small dog areas, a better rate than most of the city.

Question 4

Do Brooklyn dog parks supply waste bags?

Accepted Answer

No. None of the Brooklyn parks in our directory supplies waste bags, and only around 7% have bins, so you should plan to carry bags in and waste out. Water is similarly scarce at roughly 11% of listed parks. This is the single most common complaint from visitors used to better equipped suburban parks, and the fix is simply to keep a supply of bags clipped to the lead and a collapsible bowl in your bag at all times.

Question 5

Which Brooklyn dog parks have small dog areas?

Accepted Answer

About 21% of the parks we list have a separate small dog area, which is a stronger rate than most of New York City. These matter for puppies still building confidence, senior dogs who cannot absorb a body check from a boisterous adolescent, and small breeds at genuine physical risk in mixed play. Use our filter to find them, and respect the divide even when the small side looks empty and the main side is crowded.
