Question 1

How many dog parks are there in Philadelphia?

Accepted Answer

Our directory lists 16 dog parks across Philadelphia, with hours, amenities and maps for each. Most are neighbourhood dog runs embedded in residential areas, alongside space within the larger Fairmount Park system. Of the parks we list, 88% have a designated off-leash area, 31% have grass and 31% have separate small dog areas, which is a better rate than most dense cities in this guide.

Question 2

Are Philadelphia dog parks fenced?

Accepted Answer

About 25% of the parks we list are fenced. Fencing matters particularly here because city streets sit close to many runs, and a dog that bolts through an open gate has very little margin. If your dog does not recall reliably, filter specifically for fenced sites and check the individual park page before your first visit. Around 19% of listed parks also have a water source.

Question 3

Do Philadelphia dog parks have grass?

Accepted Answer

About 31% do, a noticeably better rate than most dense American cities where gravel and packed dirt dominate. Grass is gentler on joints and paw pads, which matters for senior dogs, puppies and dogs recovering from injury. If your dog is sensitive underfoot or prone to sore pads after gravel sessions, filter for grass surfaces and keep visits to harder-surfaced runs shorter.

Question 4

Who maintains Philadelphia dog runs?

Accepted Answer

Many are maintained with substantial help from neighbourhood volunteer groups working alongside Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. Some sites have additional rules set by those groups, and a few operate membership or registration arrangements. Following posted rules and picking up litter as well as waste genuinely matters at volunteer-run sites, because the space exists on goodwill rather than a maintenance budget.

Question 5

Is there water at Philadelphia dog parks?

Accepted Answer

At about 19% of the parks we list, and those taps are normally shut off through winter to prevent freezing. Waste bags are supplied at only around 6% of sites. Treat every visit as bring your own: a collapsible bowl, a bottle of water and a supply of bags clipped to the lead. Summer humidity makes water more important here than the temperature alone suggests.
