Q: Is blue-green algae a risk in Madison lakes?

Yes, during warm months. Blooms occur in Madison’s lakes and are dangerous to dogs that swim in or drink affected water, sometimes fatally so. Keep dogs out of still or discoloured water, avoid anything with visible scum or surface mats, rinse after any swim, and check local advisories before visiting a lakeside park. Sudden illness after a swim should be treated as an emergency.

Question 1

Do I need a permit for Madison dog parks?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The City of Madison requires a dog park permit for each dog using its off-leash exercise areas, which catches visitors out regularly. Check the city website for current fees and how to buy one, and expect to show proof of licensing and vaccination. Arriving without a permit means turning around, so sort it before your first visit rather than at the gate.

Question 2

How many dog parks are there in Madison?

Accepted Answer

Our directory lists 13 dog parks in Madison, with hours, amenities and maps for each. Several are large and lakeside, which is generous for a city of this size. Of the parks we list, 77% have a designated off-leash area, 46% are fenced and 31% have benches. Water is limited at around 8%, so bring your own year round.

Question 3

How cold is too cold for a Madison dog park visit?

Accepted Answer

In deep winter, keep visits short and watch ears, paws and tail tips for early frostbite, which shows as pale or waxy skin. Thin-coated breeds need a coat. The most common problems are ice balls forming between the toes and irritation from de-icing salt on nearby paths, so rinse and dry paws after every cold visit and consider boots or paw balm as prevention.

Question 4

Is blue-green algae a risk in Madison lakes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, during warm months. Blooms occur in Madison’s lakes and are dangerous to dogs that swim in or drink affected water, sometimes fatally so. Keep dogs out of still or discoloured water, avoid anything with visible scum or surface mats, rinse after any swim, and check local advisories before visiting a lakeside park. Sudden illness after a swim should be treated as an emergency.

Question 5

Are Madison dog parks fenced?

Accepted Answer

About 46% of the parks we list are fenced, a good rate that matters particularly at lakeside sites where an unfenced boundary meets open water. Only around 8% have separate small dog areas, so watch size mismatches, especially in deep snow where small dogs tire very quickly and can struggle to get out of the way of larger dogs at speed.
